Apart from Latin, few languages can claim to have had as much influence on the English language like Greek. Greek is one of the world's oldest languages and it has helped to shape the most modern languages in more ways than a common man would ever realize. More often than not a world will come up in a conversation that is either one of the ancient Greek words or at least a derivative of these words. Most people who use these words probably heard it from somebody else and many of them will have no idea what the origin of such words is. The reason for this is the fact that people tend to care more about communication than the tool used to communicate.
If people understood just what it took for them to be able to actually communicate then maybe they would be able to appreciate what they communicated more. Eureka is one of the few ancient Greek words that people would actually know the origin of. The story of Archimedes and his discovery as he took a bath is a world renowned tale and has been told over and over again but how many people would know that the word acme is also from the Greek language? Most people associate the word acme with the weapons that Willy coyote uses while trying to catch the road runner and beyond that they no nothing more of the word. Acme is actually a Greek word that means the highest point in any structure. Acropolis is yet another word that is normally used in the English language especially when somebody is trying to make a point or an impression on his audience. These people don't know that the word is actually Greek and it refers to an edge or an extremity of a thing or an action. The word Anemia means a deficiency in the red blood cells although it has also been used in modern times to refer to deficiencies in other areas. This is yet another word that is straight from the Greek language. A Dogma is a belief held on to by the members of a particular group whether religious or otherwise. A phobia does not actually mean a fear as many people have been led to believe by popular culture but it is actually an irrational fear according to the Greek language. Kudos is just another word that people use every other day and once again this is actually a Greek word. |
